Often working collaboratively, Emily is interested in relational practices within food webs and networks of exchange. Her processes intersect with commons gardening and degrowth strategies. Emily is of Czech and Dutch ancestry and is based on Wurundjeri Country. She has an interspecies approach to practice, informed by methodologies in composting and a commitment to group processes, including ‘co-worm-ing’ with Grey Dear, Joy Zhou, and a mobile worm farm, collective gardening with Patch-Work, and providing technical support at WORLDWIDEWORMS.NET. The gallery was made mobile by kitting out the KINGS Wheelie Bin with a video screen, powered by our car battery. Working offsite at the Queen Victoria Market, the series explored composting as a method for collective curation, in response to the KINGS Emerging Curator Program.Drawing from the ethos of a community garden working bee, these sessions invited shared investigations. mobile worm farm Boyd Community HubWurundjeri land Naarm/Melbourne This six month residency explored how practices in commoning, seen in community gardening, can be applied within artist residency spaces, and how this could inform future ‘co-worm-ing’ practices.Approaching the residency space as a common garden, we explored practices in resource sharing, maintenance, seasonality, and collective decision making, undertaking performance explorations around the Boyd Community Hub and surrounding neighbourhood - through scores, group walking practices, writing, and intensive workshopping. We hosted theoretical ‘working bees’, where we invited leading practitioners and academics in our field, to support the development of our co-worm-ing practice, and as part of investigations into research practices within non-academic environments, with limited resources and DIY approaches: Jacina Leong, Amaara Raheem, Hélène Frichot. The residency culminated in a public event, we called an “open garden”. Emily Simek Home exhibition Wurundjeri land Brunswick EastPart of the exhibition series ‘Hot Compost Home Tour’ produced with Seventh Gallery, 2024 The house shelters daydreaming, the house protects the dreamer, the house allows one to dream in peace. – Gaston Bachelard, The Poetics of Space Homecoming is a publication launch and the final exhibition in ‘Hot Compost Home Tour’, a home-based touring series with Seventh Gallery that unfolded over several months in Naarm, culminating with a shared reading of a text by artist and writer Anna Dunnill. Writing alongside the tour, Anna follows a quilt that travels to three different homes in turn, for a month each. Each leg of the home tour is curated by the home’s occupant, and carries a different expression of what a ‘home’ means and how a quilt might function within it. A house lived in continuously for thirty-seven years. A one-bedroom flat on a precarious lease. A space extending beyond the walls of the house into community gardens, schools, and the soil we share with numerous small creatures. In this event, participants were invited to join in a shared reading of the text with collaborators involved in the tour, hosted in my rental unit. The home-based tour explores composting as an approach to exhibition practice. Using relational ethics as a framework, the project considers the conditions of the various exchanges that ‘create’ compost: how and where does it come to exist? Curated by Mei Sun and her child, ‘Grow home’ is a roving exhibition that draws on the creativity of migrant culture to make a home with a young child in uncertain times.&nbsp;The exhibition unfolded alongside existent gatherings at a neighbourhood habitat garden, social enterprise urban farm and kindergarten. &nbsp; &nbsp; After years of roaming internationally, we set up a base in Naarm. We came with a curiosity to deepen our understanding of where we live through First Nations initiatives; through the local ecology and community. Home grew to be wherever my toddler and I could be planting, tending, weeding, un/learning together, hands in the soil, with the microbes, the fungi, the minibeasts, our fellow growers, and the chatter over morning tea. For ‘Grow home’, we will be weeding and planting alongside a quilt made by Emily Simek that uses fabrics dyed with homegrown and foraged plants, recalling a time when everyday textiles were made locally and told the stories of place, plants and culture. We will be at a social enterprise urban farm and a neighbourhood habitat garden. There will also be a private exhibition with a children’s group. At each site, after tending to the plants, we will come together for the ritual cuppa. There will be worm tea for the plant locals and a chance to see if we can listen underground to our minibeast neighbours via a contact microphone and headphones. ———&nbsp; Hot Compost Home Tour is&nbsp;a touring exhibition series by Emily Simek in collaboration with Merri Cheyne, Anna Dunnill, Eric Jong, Mei Sun and Doug Webb, produced with Seventh Gallery. The home-based tour explores composting as an approach to exhibition practice. Using relational ethics as a framework, the project considers the conditions of the various exchanges that ‘create’ compost: how and where does it come to exist? How are different collaborators implicated?
